Anthropogenesis – Overview
The Origin and Evolution of Humanity: An Overview of Anthropogenesis

A comprehensive overview of the theosophical doctrine of “Anthropogenesis” from H. P. Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine. It details the spiritual and physical evolution of humanity through seven successive root races. The text describes the cyclical development of consciousness and the transformation of the human form over millions of years. It also emphasizes the importance of students having a proper understanding of this concept. Thus, the text serves as a well-founded introduction to esoteric Anthropogenesis and the true origin of humankind.

The Challenge of Anthropogenesis

Anyone who opens the second volume of The Secret Doctrine enters a realm that profoundly tests the reader. While the greatest difficulty in Cosmogenesis lies in grasping highly abstract and universal processes that often reveal themselves only to intuition and are difficult to communicate to the intellect, the challenge in Anthropogenesis is different. Human evolution is a far more concrete subject, yet the modern mind finds these teachings much harder to believe. This is due to our heavily conditioned worldview and our education, which teaches that humans descended from apes through blind biological evolution—an assumption that, from an esoteric perspective, is based on missing and false facts.

Therefore, this treatise should be understood not as a mere historical narrative but as a profound study intended to broaden the modern, purely materialistic worldview and prepare readers for the complex processes that preceded the physical appearance of humankind.

Summarizing the entire history of humanity “briefly” is no easy task. Theosophical teachings present it in a far more complex and fundamentally different way than contemporary science or orthodox religion.

A central obstacle in the study of Anthropogenesis is that a coherent overall picture can only emerge once many of the concepts and processes have been understood. This overview therefore serves as preparation for later, more detailed analyses and is intended to encourage readers to approach these unfamiliar statements with an open mind.

When viewed from the perspective of the gradual descent of the purely spiritual into matter to form a suitable vessel, this system makes deep, logical sense. This knowledge was kept secret in sanctuaries for millennia and is now being passed down as a saving thread of Ariadne through the labyrinth of human history.

Much in Anthropogenesis is explained, yet much remains hidden for the time being or is only hinted at. Nevertheless, the teaching conveys a clear picture of how human history unfolded according to the archaic records.

The Law of Correspondence: From Cosmogenesis to Anthropogenesis

Anthropogenesis is not an isolated development, but rather the inevitable microcosmic continuation of Cosmogenesis. It mirrors the fundamental principles and laws of the universe on the human level. The Hermetic law, “As above, so below,” governs every step of this process. Just as the universe undergoes seven stages of differentiation during its formation, the eternal spirit requires a correspondingly differentiated vessel of matter to act in the physical world. Evolution moves cyclically across seven levels, not linearly. It proceeds in seven waves through all visible and invisible spheres of nature.

Therefore, a deep understanding of Anthropogenesis is essential to grasping the practical application of other theosophical teachings, such as karma, reincarnation, and the sevenfold nature of man, on Earth.

"The Universe is worked and guided from within outwards. As above so it is below, as in heaven so on earth; and man — the microcosm and miniature copy of the macrocosm — is the living witness to this Universal Law, and to the mode of its action."

(H.P. Blavatsky)

The Three Streams of Evolution

Modern science assumes that there is only one stream of biological evolution: the purely physical and material one. According to this view, consciousness developed through chance or mutation at some point. However, Theosophical teachings show that this is impossible. They provide a more coherent and logical account of evolution in general and of human evolution in particular.

Fundamental works of esoteric philosophy never regard evolution as a purely physical process. Rather, they regard it as a fundamentally dual process that encompasses both the outer physical form and the inner spiritual aspect equally. These two streams are therefore:

1. Spiritual (monadic) evolution: Concerns the boundless growth and unfolding of the monad, or the unity of atma-buddhi, the immortal divine spark.

2. Physical evolution, represented by the lunar Pitris (cosmic form-ancestors) who provided shadow bodies (chhayas), around which nature condensed the physical body of humans.

However, as we delve deeper into The Secret Doctrine, it becomes evident that these two currents, in their complete form, constitute a cosmic trinity. H. P. Blavatsky clarifies that spirit and matter require a connecting pole. This is why there are three inseparably interwoven currents of evolution.

The third stream of evolution is:

3. Intellectual (or Manasic) Evolution: Represented by the Manasa Dhyanis (the Sons of Wisdom), who gave humanity true consciousness and the thinking mind (Manas).

Why is this third stream so essential that it must run between the other two? Purely physical nature, driven by blind, mechanical forces, could never create divine intelligence on its own. It can only produce “meaningless forms.” At the same time, purely spiritual monads are too exalted, homogeneous, and distant from matter to gather direct experience from earthly forms without a connecting medium. The Manasa-Dhyanis bridge the gap between pure spirit and unconscious matter in our present cycle as representatives of universal intelligence.

Thus, evolution flows in three powerful, parallel streams. The convergence and union of these three streams within the human being is what makes him the complex, morally responsible being he is today.

Anthropogenesis shows us exactly when these streams converged in the history of human development.

The Three New Propositions of Anthropogenesis

In the “Preliminary Notes” to the second volume, Helena P. Blavatsky postulates three additional revolutionary propositions. These propositions form the foundation of esoteric anthropology and stand in direct opposition to materialistic science. They are the cognitive prerequisite for a theosophical understanding of human evolution.

1. Simultaneous Evolution: The Secret Doctrine teaches that seven human groups are evolving simultaneously across seven different zones of our globe. Therefore, humanity does not descend from a single pair of parents (polygenesis).

Numerous archaic records support this teaching, including the Pymander of Hermes Trismegistus and Chaldean clay tablets, which recount the creation of seven humans, or “Adams,” by the gods.

2. The Astral Precedes the Physical: The second postulate teaches that the astral body arises before the physical body. This invisible, subtle, ethereal form serves as a model or blueprint for the subsequent physical body. According to the esoteric view, matter condenses around an already existing subtle energy field. This explains why the earliest root races could not leave behind any fossil remains. They were simply too ethereal to leave traces in physical matter.

3. Man as the Forerunner: In the current fourth round of development, humans preceded all mammals, including the great apes, in the animal kingdom. Therefore, the ape is not the ancestor of man but rather a late, unnatural byproduct of human history. Humans are the prototypes of evolution on this planet, and all other kingdoms of nature follow their energetic impulses.

The Soul’s Journey Through Planetary Chains, Rounds, and Root Races

Evolution does not proceed linearly, but in cycles

To grasp the vast architecture of theosophical anthropogenesis, we must shift our focus from linear evolution on a single earth to a broader perspective that views it as a reflection of the cosmic breath.

Like the cosmos, nature also follows a precise, mathematical, cyclical blueprint. Within this framework, the immortal spark of spirit, the Monad, gradually unfolds through the seven planes of matter. These rhythms manifest as planetary chains, globes, rounds, and root races.

The Planetary Chains and Their Globes

In esoteric philosophy, no celestial body exists in isolation in space. Our Earth is not merely a collection of gross matter, but a link in a chain of seven globes known as the planetary chain, also called the world chain or Earth chain. These seven globes do not roll through space like separate pearls connected by currents; rather, they interpenetrate one another.

The Masters express this concept with absolute technical precision: The globes are in coadunition (spatial union), but not in material consubstantiality. Our physical Earth is the fourth globe (Globe D) of these seven and thus the deepest, most material point in this cycle’s curve. The other six globes are currently invisible to us because they are made of more subtle matter, and our consciousness is calibrated almost exclusively to Globe D’s material density.

Furthermore, esoteric science teaches that our Earth chain did not arise from nothing, but is the direct karmic reincarnation of an earlier, now-dead chain: the Moon chain. Accordingly, our moon is the visible, now “dead” Globe D of this preceding world chain.

The Rounds

As mentioned, evolution does not proceed statically, but rather like a gigantic tidal wave. The stream of monads (the wave of life) begins its journey on globe A of the planetary chain. It systematically works its way downward through the four kingdoms or levels of nature to globe D (the descending arc). Then, it moves back up through the four levels to globe G (the ascending arc). This passage is called a complete cycle, or a “round.” This cyclical process is repeated seven times across the entire planetary chain until the system is complete. Each round brings a specific stage of consciousness development, leading to densification during the descending arc or spiritualization of matter during the ascending arc.

Currently, our life wave is in the fourth round and has once again reached Globe D, which is of monumental significance as it marks the great turning point of evolution. Consciousness has passed the lowest point in gross matter and is beginning its ascent back to pure spirit. According to an occult law of this round, humans first appeared here—even before mammals—to create the foundation for today’s animal world through their discarded, worn-out material shells.

The Root Races and Sub-races*

When the wave of life reaches our globe D during a particular round, it pauses there to complete a sub-cycle before moving on to the next globe (E) after a period of rest. This evolutionary epoch on a single globe is, in turn, divided into seven major sections, or ages, referred to as root races*.
The theosophical concept of root races has nothing to do with modern ethnological classifications, which are narrow-minded and divisive. Rather, it describes profoundly different stages of human development, each lasting millions of years.

Each root race develops specific senses and abilities. Root races are subdivided into seven sub-races, which are divided into seven main families, as well as countless smaller branches. They merge into one another as imperceptibly as twilight blends day and night. An ancient race does not die out by chance but rather because the monads, or pilgrim souls, have completed the necessary experiences within these ancient biological vehicles. The monads then leave these forms and incarnate into the newly emerging, more suitable bodies of the subsequent sub-races. Consequently, the abandoned civilization dies out physically.

An Overview of the Root Races

A general overview of the root races to date reveals the slow descent of the spirit into matter.

The First Root Race

The first root race consisted of ethereal, shadow-like beings who were not physically condensed. Sexless, they were the astral shadows (Chhayas) of their divine ancestors, the lunar Pitris. They were pure spirit yet lacked intellect (manas). They existed in a passive spiritual state without moral self-responsibility, and their consciousness was dreamlike. During this phase, hearing developed as a sense.

The first great root race of humanity did not have an ethnological name in the modern, secular sense. In archaic records and the Stanzas of Dzyan, they are referred to as the “Self-born” or the “Sons of Yoga.” Theosophical literature also refers to it as the “Polarian Root Race” because it was located in the region of the Arctic Circle. This primordial continent is referred to in theosophical literature as the “Imperishable Sacred Land.”

Unlike later continents, such as Lemuria and Atlantis, which were caught up in the karmic law of cycles and destroyed by geological cataclysms of fire and water, the Sacred Land will never share their fate. It is the only continent to remain undestroyed from the beginning to the end of the great life cycle (manvantara) and throughout all rounds. It covered the entire North Pole like an unbroken crust or cap, and it still exists in its subtle form today, hidden from the eyes of modern science.

The Second Root Race

With each successive race, the human body became more condensed. According to the stanzas of the Dzyan, this race is named for its mode of reproduction and outward appearance. The second root race was the product of “budding and expansion” and developed as an asexual form from the sexless shadows (Chhayas) of the first race. This archaic reproductive process is best understood through microscopic biology, wherein simple cells multiply by dividing or protruding (budding). During this phase, the sense of touch developed. Toward the end of their immense evolutionary cycle, these beings’ bodies began to condense further. Later representatives of this race became the “Sweat-born” and are the direct ancestors of the early Third Race.

This humanity was geographically native to the Second Continent, which esoteric philosophy calls “Hyperborea.” This continent extended from the North Pole in a southerly and westerly direction, encompassing the entire area known today as North Asia. During the time of the Second Race, there was no perpetual ice in these northern latitudes. The climate was nearly tropical—a veritable Eden of eternal spring where lush vegetation flourished. At the end of their time, the first cataclysm occurred due to the shifting of the great waters and the alteration of the Earth’s axis. Most of the Second Race perished in this first great geological struggle, while the survivors passed into the life stream of the Third Race.

The Third Root Race

In their early stages, they were the “sweat-born,” from whom the “self-born” evolved over geological eons. Initially, these beings were androgynous or of dual gender before physically separating into men and women. This race developed the sense of sight through a “third eye” at the back of the head, which later became the pineal gland.

The history of the third root race marks the most dramatic and esoterically significant turning point in human development. Until the middle of its existence, humanity was merely a “reasonless” being—a purely physical-astral shell without an active, morally responsible mind. The greatest mystery occurred here: Physical evolution alone could not create consciousness. Only through the self-sacrificing, alchemical descent of the divine “Sons of Wisdom” (Manasaputras) into these mature shells and their igniting of the Promethean fire of thought (Manas) within them did humanity awaken as a self-aware entity. The three streams of evolution mentioned earlier were brought together by the Manasaputras here. Therefore, the human spirit did not form through purely material, biological development; it had to be “divinely” transmitted through the mediating component “Manas.”

These fully developed members of the third race were mighty giants of divine strength and beauty. They became the guardians of all the mysteries of heaven and earth. Their evolutionary history is reflected in many myths and religions.
In theosophical terminology, the gigantic continent on which this race lived and completed its physical development is generally referred to as Lemuria, and its inhabitants as Lemurians.

Geographically, Lemuria encompassed a vast area extending far beyond today’s Indian and Pacific Oceans. The highest mountain peaks of this former continent now form isolated island groups, such as the Sandwich Islands, New Zealand, and Easter Island. The colossal statues on Easter Island are silent, stone witnesses to the gigantic stature of those ancient peoples. The continent sank due to subterranean fires, which led to the race’s demise.

The Fourth Root Race

With the emergence of the Atlanteans, the fourth root race, another decisive turning point in human evolution occurred. Until then, bodies had been ethereal or semi-astral, but they became fully densified as physical matter reached its deepest and most compact state. During this period, the human form took its final shape, although the early Atlanteans were still gigantic.

The mind (Manas) also awakened to its full objective and intellectual power during this epoch. The Atlanteans developed an articulate language called Vaikharî Vāch and built a civilization of immense technological and architectural splendor. Even the advanced civilizations of ancient Egypt and Greece pale in comparison. It was the heyday of pure intellect on the physical plane. In this root race, the sense of taste was perfected.

The prehistoric continent of Atlantis was located mainly, but not exclusively, in the area now known as the Atlantic Ocean. The still-visible mountain peaks, such as Pico del Teide on Tenerife and the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, are silent witnesses to this majestic continent’s existence. The tiny island fragment Poseidonis, which the Greek philosopher Plato described as “Atlantis,” existed many eons after the sinking of the main continent and was submerged in the floods about 11,000 years ago.

The Atlanteans’ tragic downfall lay in the highest development of intellect up to that point combined with the fourth principle, Kama (passion), which reached its peak in the fourth round and fourth root race. This overwhelmed their spiritual intuition (Buddhi). Seized by pride and arrogance, they proclaimed: “We are the kings, we are the gods.” During this time, the paths of development diverged into the Right and Left Hands of Magic. Many turned to black magic, becoming a race of powerful sorcerers who misused their powers for selfish, destructive purposes. They desecrated the divine gift of procreative power, using it for mere sensual gratification, and they worshiped anthropomorphic, material idols.

The cosmic law of karma sealed the fate of this continent. While the previous race on Lemuria was mainly destroyed by fire, Atlantis met its end through water. Over millions of years, the continent was gradually torn apart and swallowed by floods due to violent geological upheavals caused by shifts in the Earth’s axis.

Only the chosen few who remained faithful to the inner light and refused to follow the selfish path were guided by their divine instructors to safe, higher-lying areas, such as Central Asia, in time. These people formed the spiritual and physical foundation of our present fifth root race.

The Fifth Root Race

We are currently in the fourth round on the fourth globe (D) in the fifth root race. This race is known as the Aryan race. The term is derived from the Sanskrit word ārya, which literally means “holy” or “noble.” Originally, it was a respectful title given to wise rishis and initiates who walked the path to liberation (nirvana). It is of the utmost importance to free this term from all modern ethnological or political distortions. In genuine esoteric science, the term describes a specific stage of the evolution and consciousness of the immortal soul. It has absolutely nothing to do with elevating one physical bloodline over another.

The focus of our fifth root race is the development of the fifth principle of the human constitution: Manas, the thinking mind or intellect. While the fourth race (the Atlanteans) brought physical matter to its densest point, our epoch is the era of the spirit and mind. Physically, the sense of smell emerged in the fifth race. Thus, all five physical senses have fully developed, while the sixth and seventh senses lie dormant within us as hidden spiritual potentials that will only fully blossom in future races. Mentally, our epoch sharpens the analytical and discriminating power of thought, which is why intellectual and scientific achievements dominate our civilization.

Since we are in the fourth round but passing through the fifth root race, we have surpassed the densest point of material evolution. We are now on the ascending arc once again. Furthermore, we are at the transition from the fifth sub-race to the beginning of the sixth. Our task is to detach our highly developed intellectual reason, the fifth principle, from the fourth principle, passion, and reunite it with the sixth principle, Buddhi: spiritual intuition and universal compassion. This frees us from the bonds of pure materiality. This challenge is all the greater because we are deep within the Kali Yuga, the Dark or Iron Age. This age is marked by immense spiritual darkness and materialism as grave karmic consequences of the past unfold. Thus, divine instructors, the pre-human Buddhas and seers, initiated this root race into the arts, sciences, and universal ethics.

The cradle of this fifth root race emerged over a million years ago in the high plateaus of Central Asia, long before historical European peoples existed. From this ancient center, which is now often inhospitable, the branches of humanity flowed southward toward India and westward. Geologically and historically, Europe is regarded as the fifth great continent that arose in parallel with this race.

Unraveling the Unsolved Mysteries of Human History

Armed with this esoteric knowledge, we begin to see the world differently. Ancient myths, legends, and biblical stories are no longer considered childish fables, but rather profound, veiled records of historical and spiritual truths.

Universal traditions about giants, such as the Titans, Cyclopes, and Nephilim, are not inventions but remind us of earlier phases of human development. The Lemurians and early Atlanteans were physical giants of colossal stature. Many of science’s unsolved mysteries, especially in archaeology, suddenly become clear. Massive architectural finds and Cyclopean structures, such as the colossal statues on Easter Island and in Bamiyan, indisputably point to the existence of these giant races and their architectural prowess. We are given the key to understanding the similarities in knowledge and construction methods across continents.

Likewise, the various geological cataclysms that have occurred throughout Earth’s history become explainable. At the end of great cycles, the Earth’s surface is always “cleansed” by fire or devastating floods. This causes ancient continents, such as Lemuria and Atlantis, to sink and new ones to rise. These new continents serve as homes for the next race.

The Significance of Anthropogenesis for Students

From the Cosmos to Humanity: Anthropogenesis as the Culmination

Anthropogenesis is the inevitable microcosmic culmination of cosmogenesis. True to the Hermetic law, “As above, so below,” the universal process of creation is reflected in humankind’s evolution. Just as the universe is created from the inside out, with the divine idea descending into matter through formative forces, the human journey also unfolds. While the cosmos provides the vast stage and physical vessels, anthropogenesis describes the divine actor entering his vessel. This is the narrative of the spirit’s descent into matter, corresponding to an evolution on the physical plane. Ultimately, it leads to an ascent from the depths of materiality to spiritual liberation.

This knowledge, hidden for a long time, has become accessible in our present age of transition thanks to Helena Blavatsky and her teachers. It serves as a powerful counterbalance to the rampant materialism and religious dogmatism of our time. Anthropogenesis alleviates our fear of the unknown, replacing blind faith with knowledge based on universal laws. It reveals that we are not mere products of chance or Darwinian randomness, but rather immortal divine beings participating in the perfection of nature through a magnificent cyclical process.

The Journey of the Eternal Pilgrim Through the Ages

Human beings are a complex union of the essences of all celestial hierarchies. Our sevenfold constitution is a legacy of the cosmos. The lunar Pitris bestowed upon us the astral body; the Earth, the physical body; and the solar angels, the fire of the mind (Manas). Based on this, the Monad, the “Eternal Pilgrim,” traverses every state of existence—from the mineral and plant kingdoms to human consciousness—to attain universal awareness through self-induced efforts.

Through studying the root races, we realize that we were once those who lived in earlier ages, such as Lemuria or Atlantis. We are literally our own ancestors. This realization also explains the striking similarities in myths, ancient knowledge, and architectural structures across all continents—they spring from a common spiritual root. Humanity’s history is far more glorious and responsible than modern science suggests. The journey through the rounds and races is the soul’s path to mastery and conscious unity with the divine source.

Overcoming Separateness: Ethics in Action

The study of anthropogenesis is not merely an intellectual exercise, but it also has profound ethical implications. When we realize that every soul has undergone the same million-year pilgrimage, the illusion of separateness dissolves. This teaching dispels the “curse” of modern civilization—the idea that life is a relentless, Darwinian “struggle for existence.”

This notion is the source of most suffering and crime because it is based on the delusion of the separate ego. Anthropogenesis provides scientific and esoteric proof that all human beings were formed from the same divine shadows and are animated by the same flame of the mind. Therefore, in cosmic logic, there are no superior or inferior races. Since peoples and nations go through cycles of rise and fall and we incarnate alternately within these groups as immortal souls, any racial or spiritual arrogance loses its foundation.

The Doctrine of the Heart and Universal Brotherhood

Here, the intellectual structure reaches its highest purpose: the Doctrine of the Heart. Recognizing that life is a chain of cause and effect (karma) takes the selfish edge off the struggle of existence. We recognize that our actions today shape not only our own future, but also that of the entire human family.

True reform is possible only through an inner transformation of consciousness. The goal is achieved when the mind understands the history of evolution, the heart recognizes it as the story of humanity’s soul, and the hands begin to serve humanity in a spirit of brotherhood. This is “Universal Brotherhood in Action”—the perfect harmony of mind, heart, and hand. We are all sparks of the same divine fire, merely wearing different garments. Our task is to act with this awareness, serving as selfless helpers and accompanying humanity—this “great orphan”—on its arduous journey home.
